How to configure an ESXi Host to use Active Directory in vSphere Client

The vSphere Client can be used to configure your ESXi host to use Active Directory. Here is a quick guide on how to configure an ESXi host to use Active Directory as an authentication service.

Step 1: Select the ESXi Host from the Inventory of your vSphere Client (via Home > Inventory > Inventory). Go to Configuration > Authentication Services > Properties. Properties option is found at the top right of the host configuration page.

Step 2:

  • Select Active Directory as the directory service type.
  • Type in your domain name and click Join Domain.

Step 3: Type in your domain administrator username and password, and click Join Domain.

Click Ok to exit the Directory Services Configuration dialog box. Your authentication services should now be running.
